It can't be genetic, as handbags have only been around for about 150 years. 1. The Mouawad's 1001 Nights Diamond Purse - $3.8 million
Officially certified by Guinness World Records the Mouawad 1001 Nights Diamond Purse is now the most expensive designer handbag in the world at $3.8 million. The heart-shaped purse is handcrafted from 18kt gold and has 4,517 diamonds (4,356 colorless, 105 yellow, 56 pink) with a total weight of 381.92 carats. It was made by ten artisans who worked on it for a total of 8,800 hours.
2. The Hermes Birkin bag created by Japanese designer Ginza Tanaka - $1.9 million
This Hermes bags was apparently sold in 2008 for around $1.9 million. It is made of platinum and has over 2,000 diamonds. It is also versatile, so that in addition to being a handbag you can also use the diamond strap as a necklace or bracelet by removing it from the bag. The bag itself has an 8-carat pear shaped shimmering diamond that can also be used separately
3. The Chanel "Diamond Forever" Classic Handbag - $261,000
The "Diamond Forever" classic handbag boasts 334 diamonds for a total of 3.56 carats, in 18-carat white gold. The shoulder straps are also made from white gold. There are only 13 available worldwide, with five of them being in the USA.
4. Lana Marks Cleopatra Bag - $250,000
Lana Marks produces one Cleopatra clutch for retail each year. The one in the picture is made of metallic silver alligator skin and a clasp with 1,500 black and white diamonds in 18-carat white gold. Helen Mirren wore the $250,000 Lana Marks Cleopatra Clutch at the 2007 Academy Awards. Lana only allows one star per year to carry her handmade diamond studded designs down the crimson carpet. How snooty is that ?
5. Urban Satchel Louie Vuitton Bag - $150,000
The Louie Vuitton Urban Satchel Bag is created from all sorts of urban junk e.g. cigarette packets, water bottle, tea bags and band aid. Named after British singer/actress Jane Birkin. The clasp of this tote boasts 10 carats of white diamonds. The bag itself is made of crocodile. You can get cheaper versions sarting at around $5000

The Hermes Birkin created by Japanese designer Ginza Tanaka is... well nice and decently looking...but the Urban Satchel Louis Vuitton Bag and Gadino Bag by Hilde Palladino is just a total garbage... i don't think it's art in any way that i try to understand it...the rest of the bags are simple...nothing unusual except for the kind of leather they use...still unreasonably priced... wearing something expensive doesn't make you look expensive... i have seen a few people buying expensive stuff from louis vuitton and other designers and seeing them wear it didn't give justice to the "status symbol" that these items are supposedly portraying... i even remember seeing this lady in a mall wearing a fendi skirt, a gucci shoes, and chanel shirt and seriously seeing all those monograms all together is not style... it totally was a disaster! Aside from that, considering all the class AAA+ replica items that's all over the market now who's copied almost all the details of an original, i doubt even a pro can identify a fake one from an original not unless you hang the certificato all over your bag for everyone to see that you have a pricey bag... seriously, an example would be an LV bag...yes it's quite costly but i hope the price goes with the hardware they use for their zippers... why use brass anyway and sell one at such an overpriced cost, how expensive has brass become anyway?

It's all about perception and vanity etc... logos all over the place, basically you are paying to advertise somebody's stuff - if they paid me then maybe I would buy something with a logo on it, but if they want me to wear their logo then they should pay me.
The garbage bags you mentioned are indeed garbage - and the other ones whether Gucci or Vuitton or whatever are all overpriced. As you say there are also a lot of fakes so most people think you have bought a fake anyway. But the genuine articles are better quality and will last longer and may even increase in value over time, but they are very expensive ! So why people bother with designer bags and designer shoes and designer jeans beats me - but I put up the hubpage 'cause it is interesting to see what people do with their money. The Louis Vuitton bag was a complete shock to me that one, that bag would be that expensive two, that Louis Vuitton would make a bag that ugly because my mom (I'm 11) actually has Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Prada, and other really expensive stuff, no I'm not trying to shoe off. Bit the rose bag was amazing detail and i liked the design I thought it was smart and new. But the hermés one that was $1.9 million dollars had also amazing detail with the platinum, diamonds and the leather I would deffinetly like to buy that for my girlfriend when I'm older:) I also liked the article it was very helpful:)

People who have a lot of money can do what they want with it of course, it's just a pity they don't mind paying thousands for a bag to carry stuff around in, but they squeal like stuck pigs when you ask them to give their employees a pay rise. i currently live in an Asian country and i see the craze for LVs and Coach handbags around me.. even if some of the women do not earn enough to pay for their mortgages, they most definitely buy these expensive handbags. it baffles me as to why they are so crazy about these labels especially when they don't even have enough money to spare. however i realized that it has become a status symbol for them more than anything else and it is really sad to see so. I so much enjoyed reading all the comments! I own a few authentic LV, Gucci, Fendi, Coach, Dior and Prada bags that I collected over the years and most of them are vintage and only bought for a fraction of the price from Thrift shops, pre-owned stores and on-line shops, all in their original dustbags. I like vintage designer bags because I believe the vintage ones are classic, never goes out of style, and at least, in my opinion, of obvious authenticity (compared to the costly latest models and their 99% replicas nowadays). Like most of you said, bags are women's status symbol and I carry my bags with pride. It's sad though that I couldn't carry my precious LV monogram bags all the time! Not with oily hands or in bad weathers! Cowhide leather in monogram Louis Vuitton bags easily get dirty, darken and leave permanent mark even their boxes and paper bags and I don't understand why an expensive item as such could easily blemish in a blink of an eye. Even my vintage Gucci bags are already starting to flake inside and scuff! Is it really worth buying? What happens to quality and durability that you pay for especially for expensive brand new stuff? Very ironic, huh?!

Nevertheless, good quality bags do generally represent a good investment, as they tend to increase in value over time, as some people collect them, provided they are in good condition. If America had a good reason for being broke, you could maybe use that, but really they didnt have a hurricane like half the rest of the world! I think it's amazing to even think that someone could spend 1.9 million on 'a bag', when such large amounts of money could be invested in say 10 HOUSES which could provide a huge rental income cumulatively (or be given to charity to save lives of a small 3rd world country perhaps). This is coming from a male perspective, so I don't quite understand women's fascination with a bag, but I think one thing is clear: the only ones who are buying such bags are not self made millionaires because every self made millionaire will tell you every penny counts (I've got relatives who can truly attest to that statement) and in the rare case that a self made millionaire purchases a 1.9 million dollar bag, it is for his wife/ ...or the owner did not purchase the bag, but had one made for herself given its her bag company in the first place.
